When a missing child is being looked for, internetusers sometimes spread a detection message by e-mail. Unfortunately it is inevitable that the message keeps circulating after the child is found. It is also possible that such messages aren't correct or even totally made up. In internetjargon we call such messages 'hoaxes'.
Fabienne Nuttin, Counselor: "A divorced father with shared custody was worried when his daughter didn't show up on the appointed day, so he sent a detection message into the world online. It turned out to have been a simple misunderstanding. Unfortunately, the message about the disappearance had spread widely. Our emergency number was glowing red for weeks with all kinds of calls about the 'disappearance'. Child Focus published a message about this and other 'hoaxes', aged, outdated, false or made up information that keeps circulating through civillians who mean it well."
